Server changes - markg - 10-07-2009

I am in the process of debugging the new server system/software.

Today, i moved the tf2 server to the new hardware; it is just for the next couple days, and just to debug the hardware and new control panel system i will be using to admin all the servers. When it is complete, we will be able to have multiple server admins update/reset the servers if they crash, so they wont be totally dependent upon me any more (which is a good thing).

if you notice ANYTHING different, please let me know. it will change back to normal either friday night or saturday morning. i did this now because i will be travelling friday and want to test the remote system to see if it works/what kind of problems i run into.

Back to normal under the old hardware.

the test results; new hardware worked great, no isssues at all found (no crashes etc.), so we are ready for that change.

the control panel still needs work; it works from the same lan space, didnt work externally. i think i know whats wrong....

last night killersclone helped me work out the remaining issues with the control panel, and now it works!

this gives us the ability, when we switch to the new hardware, to authorize people to remotely start/stop/reboot/update the servers from any web browser!

clone launched and updated them several times, i was able to change his permissions from seeing everything, to seeing all the servers, to seeing only the tf2 servers (yes, servers; there will be two at some point; one open like now, the other a password protected practice server which is more flexible to changes etc. Im also planning on three L4D servers, just not sure if i have the bandwidth to run everything; we will have to wait and see. the Hardware will certainly support it. )

for those 'renting' servers from a hosting company, this isnt a big deal, since they already had this feature built in else they couldnt control their server. But for us it is huge, since that was the last piece they had that we didnt, and we have many more things they DONT have and wish they did (like a dedicated server that allows us to run whatever we want, and change it whenever we want).

And we dont have to continuously beg the members for $$$ to do it!!!
