i ran out of space on my main drive (which is only 148gb, but fast) so i had to move something.
Turned out Steam and associated files/games was taking up about 50gb of that space, so it had to go.
a search turned up the following article on how to move the steam folder. Never thought it would be this easy; in fact other than the copy time to the new location, it took all of about 5 minutes!
