Server Maintenance
#1
i have had some issues with the server over the last several days, and had to do some maintenance, so it has been down here and there.

i thought i was done yesterday, but it seems not, so expect some intermittant outages today.

as of this morning the server is healthy again!

lots of issues; a failed disk drive in the raid array might have contributed, hard to tell. But full repair to the drives/array/operating system has straighted everything out (i think....let me know if you find any problems).

ok, so healthy doesnt necessarily mean fixed....

the server has been running pretty much unattended for over a year, and everything worked well until about a week ago.

see above, but the disk issues and file corruptions are all repaired. there is one nagging issue with the remote console, in that it sometimes crashes when connecting. tracking it down, but its tedious, since each piece works stand alone; i suspect it is some interaction with a recent software update.

so in the mean time i took the time to update the system files etc. so when its done it will work another year unattended!
hopefully this wont take too long. when its up it works fine, its just when i try to remote in that it crashes.

[edit] i took the time to do some extensive moving of the server files to make maintenance/management easier. Also added a new firewall to keep out the uninvited. let me know if i broke anything, or if anything doesnt work quite right, but it should be ok.

updated a few things, and, well, sometimes updates are a good thing....

the sql server wouldnt work right after the 'upgrade' and the apache server, which is used for server management, wouldnt stay running. a search of the net showed others were having the same issue with this version.

so a complete delete/reinstall fixed the issue. kind of a pain, but at least this way i know all remnants of the hacker are gone, and the server is back up to 100% again!
